Hill Walking in the Scottish Borders

The Scottish Borders is a hidden gem for Hill walkers with many walks over its length and breadth.
New Woll Estate is the ideal base for families or for larger groups. We can accommodate up to 22 people in our five 4star holiday properties and we are dog friendly.
Being so central we are only an hours drive from the cities of Edinburgh and Carlisle with Newcastle slightly further away.
We are only 7 miles from Hawick and only 5 miles from Selkirk and with Galashiels only 16 miles away we are very central to all the Borders Towns.
With the lovely Thief’s Road Walk on your doorstep a walk that goes through New Woll Estate and out into the Woll Valley.
The Borders is a haven for wildlife with many birds of prey including the rare Osprey and Buzzards and many Hawks are seen regularly flying around the estate.
With the now rare Red Squirrel and Deer, Foxes, Hare’s, Pheasants, Stoat’s and Weasels commonplace in New Woll Estate, every morning you could wake up to see any of these animals scurrying around outside the properties. It’s a good idea to have a camera at the ready, as you may be able to get some very good close up photos.      
The properties have Drying Cupboards so if the weather does turn nasty you know you can get your clothing dry for the next day.
All the properties have all the luxuries that you need washer/dryers; dishwashers etc and we provide all your linen and towels for the duration of your stay.

The Golf Clubhouse with Hazelknowe Restaurant and bar are now open all of which you are able to use during the duration of your stay. Pre-Booking tables in the Restaurant is now essential to avoid dissapointment.

Walks around Selkirk

There are ten popular walks in and around the town of Selkirk (4 miles north from Woll Estate)
All are in a very popular brochure that the tourist board sell for a modest £1.
Brief descriptions of the walks that are in the booklet are below.

Walk 1
Ettrick Water Circular (North) Time 1hr
A short walk of approximately 2 Miles (3km) that starts in the Victoria Car Park in Selkirk and follows the course of the river Ettrick and then turns back on its self.
This is a very flat walk that all age groups could manage easily.

Walk 2
Ettrick Water Circular (South) Time 2.5hrs
A walk of around 5.5 miles (8km) starts the same as the north walk in the Victoria Car Park and is fairly easy.

Walk 3
Bridgehaugh-Linden Church-Broomhill. Time 2.5 hrs
A walk of around 5 miles through riverside and woodland, it starts in the Victoria Car Park. Strong Boots/Walking shoes are recommended as it can be quite muddy at certain times of the year.

Walk 4
Buxton-Greenhead-St Helens Time 2.5hrs
Starts in the car park at Scott’s Place and goes for 5 Miles as with Walk 3 Strong Boots/Walking shoes are recommended.

Walk 5
Philiphaugh-Tibbie Tamson’s Grave-Harehead 2-3 hours
A walk of around 4 miles that is quite easily with the only climb up to Tibbie Tamson’s Grave.
Boots/Walking shoes are recommended.

Walk 6
The Three Brethren 3-4 Hrs
The famous walk in Selkirk that is around 7-8 miles (12km)
The views at the top are stunning; this is recommended for serious walkers.
It is advised to take along good clothing as the weather can change throughout the course of the day.
Boots/Walking shoes are a must.

Walk 7
Broadmeadows- Philiphaugh- Newark 4 Hrs
Good paths are a feature of this walk and have a steep climb early on. Distance is around 7.5 miles (12km)
Boots/Walking shoes are recommended.

Walk 8
Bow hill – The Lady’s Walk 1.5 hrs
Starts and finishes at Bowhill House, the walk is around 3 miles (5km) with excellent roads and tracks.
Boots/Walking shoes are recommended.

Walk 9
Bowhill – The Duchess’ Drive 4hrs
Starts at Bowhill car park and is 7 miles (12km) it is a very popular walk as the scenery is outstanding throughout.
Having done this walk myself I can highly recommend it. It is worth taking a picnic and stopping at the top to admire the views.
Boots/Walking shoes are recommended.

Walk 10
Gala Rig-Lindean Reservoir and Greenhead
Begins in a small car park on the St Boswells road. It is only 5 miles but will take you at least 3 hours. Some beautiful Lochs are on this route and are a haven for bird life.
Boots/Walking shoes are recommended.
